Sonic Labyrinth  Sega1995If there’s one thing I hate — just one thing — it’s when an ambiguously named evil mastermind replaces my favorite shoes with a pair of cursed sneakers. Next thing you know all your friends are robots of some kind and you’re rolling around trying to free them from eternal metal servitude while collecting rings and power-ups. With all our social progression and whatnot that may seem pretty outlandish these days, but back in the 90s that kind of situation was called a "weekday".

It is also totally what happens in Sonic Labyrinth, where Dr. Eggman (née Robotnik) has taken Sonic’s shoes, but look, Sonic can tuck-and-roll faster than most Olympians can sprint, and that’s what you’ll be doing, while collecting chaos emeralds and navigating your way to glory. This game falls into the category — like Sonic Spinball or Mean Bean Machine — of applying the Sonic characters to a different sort of game idea, experimenting with the maze-and-puzzle format which was a natural for the portable console.

Sylvan Tale  Sega1995Game description from [[link:http://agtp.romhack.net/ Aeon Genesis]]:

Sylvan Tale... this game is amazing. It´s kind of a Zelda clone, but you get all sorts of special abilities and junk. The script (courtesy of Shih Tzu´s scriptwriting) is also excellent and as of this project´s release, is easily my favorite of all the scripts I´ve had to insert. Do NOT pass this amazing gem by!

Royal Stone  Sega1995Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]:

Released late into the life of the Game Gear, this has got to be one of the prettiest titles for the console I've played. The graphics and sound are up to par with many SNES and Mega Drive titles, which impressed me right off the bat. Under the hood, it's a mostly normal strategy RPG with a few tweaks, like a regular RPG-influenced battle system and elemental attributes that affect your strength. First impressions of the story give the impression that this could be an interesting, if not to mention fun, title. This is the sequel to Crystal Warriors, which saw a US release.

Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict  Sega1995Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]:

Shining Force Gaiden: The Final Conflict is the third in the Game Gear's Shining Force Gaiden series, and (I assume) the stunning conclusion to the trilogy. The second game came out in English as [[gameid:43867 Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya]], and the first two actually had English releases as a Sega CD remake called [[gameid:33172 Shining Force CD]]. Until 2005, however, this final chapter was Japanese-only.

So how is it? Well, like the previous Game Gear titles, it's a series of fantasy strategy battles set to a plot in the Shining Force universe. Unlike the Genesis titles, there are no town-exploration scenes, so you spend most of your time just fighting battles or watching cutscenes. If you haven't played the first two, be warned that you may feel like you're being thrown into the middle of a story without any idea who anyone is, or at least I did. This seems to be more the fault of the game than the translation, though.

The gameplay itself seems like the usual solid Shining Force tactical fantasy combat, with your archers and centaurs and robots and mages. So don't delay, finish the saga now!
